This is the single biggest decision in functional mushroom manufacturing, and most buyers don't know to ask about it. There are two ways to get mushroom material into a gummy:
Mycelium grown on grain. Cheap. The producer grows mushroom roots (mycelium) on a substrate of grain like oats or rice, then dries and powders the entire mass — grain and all. The resulting "mushroom powder" is mostly starch with minimal actual mushroom compounds. It can legally be called "mushroom powder," which is how the category got its quality problem.
Fruiting body extracts. The actual mushroom — the part you'd recognize as a mushroom — harvested, extracted, and concentrated for active compound content. This is what serious functional mushroom brands use, and what produces products with documented beta-glucan content.

Fruiting body extract is concentrated from the actual mushroom and contains documented active compounds like beta-glucans.
