How to Choose a CBD Gummy Manufacturer: A Brand Owner's Guide

Choosing a CBD gummy manufacturer is one of the most consequential decisions a brand owner makes. The right partner becomes a multi-year relationship; the wrong one means melted gummies in summer transit, inconsistent dosing, missed launch deadlines, and refund tickets that erode the brand you've spent years building.

Great wine starts with great grapes — and great CBD gummies start with great hemp and the right manufacturing decisions. This guide breaks down what to look for when vetting a contract manufacturer.

A note on our perspective: Ajax Creations is a contract manufacturer, and we also operate two of our own consumer brands — Go Green Hemp and Royal Remedies — both made in our Plantation, Florida facility using the exact processes and standards we offer to private label and white label clients. We use what we sell. That perspective shapes everything below.

Start at the Source: Hemp Quality Comes First

Think of hemp plants as natural sponges — they absorb everything, good and bad, from the soil they grow in. This is why sourcing is the first thing brand owners should ask a prospective manufacturer about.

Hemp grown in the USA falls under the 2018 Farm Bill, which sets the federal compliance framework and limits contaminants like heavy metals that aren't always controlled in internationally sourced material. When vetting a manufacturer, ask three questions about their hemp:

  1. Where is the hemp grown? (USA-grown is the baseline you should expect.)

  2. What documentation does the supplier provide? (Certificates of Analysis on the raw material, not just the finished gummy.)

  3. Is the supplier GMP-certified? (Good Manufacturing Practices certification means the supplier itself operates under quality protocols, not just the manufacturer downstream.)

A manufacturer who can't answer these questions specifically is probably sourcing on price rather than quality. We document USA sourcing and GMP certification for every active that enters our facility — for our own Go Green Hemp products and for every brand we manufacture for.

Infused vs. Sprayed: The Most Important Manufacturing Question to Ask

The single biggest quality decision in CBD gummy manufacturing is how the active ingredient gets into the gummy. Brand owners should understand this difference before signing a manufacturing contract — and most don't.

Think of it like baking chocolate chip cookies. A great baker mixes the chips directly into the dough so every cookie has an even bite. A lazy baker sprinkles a few chips on top after the cookies come out of the oven. The same principle separates premium CBD gummies from cheap alternatives.

High-quality gummies are infused — CBD is blended into the gummy formula before it's molded, distributing evenly throughout every piece. This guarantees consistent potency. Lower-quality manufacturers cut corners by spraying or coating finished gummies with a CBD solution, which produces uneven doses, degrades over time, and can rub off in the bottle.

When evaluating a manufacturer, ask directly: "Are your gummies infused or sprayed?" If they hesitate, evade, or say "both options are available," that's a red flag. We only manufacture infused gummies — for Ajax Creations clients and for our own brands. Spraying isn't a cost-saving compromise we're willing to make.

Choosing a Spectrum: Building Your Product Line

Once you've confirmed a manufacturer infuses (rather than sprays), the next decision is which type of CBD to build your product around. CBD comes in three forms, and the choice shapes your customer positioning, compliance posture, and price point.

CBD Isolate is pure CBD — nothing else. THC-free, easy to label, simplest compliance story. Often the right starting point for first-time brands or for markets where THC sensitivity is high.

Broad Spectrum contains multiple cannabinoids and beneficial plant compounds with the THC removed. Lets you market a more "whole-plant" product without THC concerns.

Full Spectrum contains everything the hemp plant offers, including trace THC under the 2018 Farm Bill's 0.3% threshold. The most natural plant profile, but it comes with compliance considerations — some states restrict full-spectrum products and some retailers won't carry them.

A good manufacturer will offer all three and help you choose based on your target market, distribution channels, and brand positioning. We manufacture all three across CBD isolate, broad spectrum, and full spectrum formulations for clients, and our own brands span the range too. If a manufacturer offers only one spectrum, that's a capability limitation worth flagging.

What Documentation Should You Expect From a Manufacturer

After choosing your spectrum, you need proof that what's on the label is actually in the gummy. A serious manufacturer should provide a full documentation package — not just one piece of paper.

Certificate of Analysis (COA). A detailed report card on the finished product, issued by an independent third-party lab (not the manufacturer's internal QC). The COA shows the exact amount of CBD and other cannabinoids per gummy, confirms the THC level is within the legal limit, and screens for contaminants — pesticides, heavy metals, mold, residual solvents. You're looking for "Pass" next to each safety category and matching potency numbers vs. your label.

Pre-production testing. A COA on the finished batch is the standard. Better manufacturers also test raw actives before manufacturing begins to verify the starting material meets specifications. This catches problems before they enter your product. We do both phases — pre and post production — on every batch we manufacture, for client brands and for our own.

Facility certifications. Ask whether the facility is FDA-registered (legally required for manufacturing facilities) and whether they operate under GMP-compliant protocols. These are baseline expectations for a serious operation.

Batch records and traceability. When a retailer, distributor, or regulator asks for documentation on a specific lot, your manufacturer should be able to produce full batch records on demand. This is what separates real manufacturers from brokers.

Speaking of brokers: many "manufacturers" in the cannabinoid space are actually brokers who don't make anything themselves. They take your order, mark it up, and pass it to an actual co-packer downstream. You pay broker margin without the relationship with the actual producer. Ask directly: "Are you the manufacturer, or do you contract out production?" If they say "we have partner facilities" or evade the question, you've found a broker.

A publicly available COA, a real facility you can tour, and a straight answer about whether they make the product themselves — these are the non-negotiables.

Key Takeaways for Brand Owners

The CBD market is full of manufacturers who promise quality. Cut through the noise by focusing on what you can verify:

  1. USA-grown hemp with documented sourcing and GMP-certified suppliers

  2. Infused, not sprayed — verified by asking directly and confirmed by sampling

  3. Spectrum options — full, broad, and isolate, all available from the same partner

  4. Two-phase third-party testing with full COAs on every batch

  5. Direct manufacturer, not a broker — confirmed by facility tour or production records

  6. FDA-registered, GMP-compliant facility with batch records on demand

The right manufacturer treats these as table stakes, not premium features. We do — and we have to, because we sell our own brands manufactured under the same standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the typical MOQ for CBD gummy manufacturing?

MOQs vary widely. Some manufacturers require minimums in the hundreds of thousands of units; direct manufacturers like Ajax Creations offer significantly more flexibility — minimums depend on formula complexity and packaging configuration, and emerging brands are welcome. Always ask for MOQs specific to your project before assuming.

How long does CBD gummy manufacturing take?

Typical timelines: white label projects ship within 3–6 weeks of order confirmation; private label projects ship within 6–12 weeks from the initial conversation, including R&D and sample iteration. Brands with packaging already sourced can move faster. Lead time should be a clear, written commitment from your manufacturer — not a vague "a few weeks."

What's the difference between infused and sprayed CBD gummies?

Infused gummies have CBD blended into the gummy mixture before molding, distributing evenly throughout every piece for consistent potency. Sprayed gummies have CBD applied to the surface after production — the coating is uneven, degrades over time, and produces inconsistent doses. Ajax Creations manufactures infused gummies exclusively.

Should I choose private label or white label CBD gummies?

White label uses our proven formulas with your branding — faster launch, lower cost, less customization. Private label means a custom formula developed by our in-house R&D team exclusively for your brand — slower and more expensive, but the formula is yours alone. Most first-time brands launch white label, prove the market, and graduate to private label once volume justifies the investment.

What documentation should I expect from a CBD gummy manufacturer?

At minimum: a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from an ISO-certified third-party lab on every finished batch, with potency and contaminant screening; confirmation of FDA registration and GMP-compliant production protocols; batch records available on demand; and ideally pre-production testing of active ingredients before manufacturing begins. If a manufacturer can't produce any of these, walk away.

How do I verify a contract manufacturer isn't actually a broker?

Ask three direct questions: "Do you manufacture the gummies in your own facility?" "Can I tour the facility?" "What's your address?" Brokers will evade, redirect, or quote "partner facilities" without specifics. Real manufacturers will give you a facility address, welcome a tour, and answer specifically about their own equipment, processes, and team. If you're considering moving production to Ajax, we encourage a visit to our Plantation, Florida facility before signing.
